If you want to escape the downtown and midtown areas of Atlanta head to the Virginia Highlands shopping village. With not a large chain store in sight, this pretty area is populated with lovely, inspirational stores offering a variety of organic, artisan and locally made products and food. Right at the intersection at 1017 North Highland Ave you will find Yeah! Burger – a fantastic organic burger joint that is taking Atlanta by storm. This place was packed with people of all ages when we dropped in. Choose from grass-fed beef or bison, naturally raised chicken and turkey burgers, veggie burgers and grass-fed hot dogs. Sundaes, floats and concretes are all made from organic milk and cream. Enjoy the alfresco terrace if you can. Gluten-free buns and fries available. The Belly General Store, at 772 North Highland Avenue - a huge airy store – it’s historic building that offers exposed brick walls, polished floors and high ceilings. Belly offers a range of unique and artisan-made goods that include freshly baked bagels, sweets, popular cupcakes, cheese and freshly squeezed organic juices – all free from preservatives and additives. If you are looking for a sustainable place to have dinner then try Goin’ Coastal at 1021 Virgnia Avenue NE. is a sustainable seafood restaurant that features high quality fish from sustainable sources. If you are in the mood for authentic Italian gelato try one of the 62 flavours at Paolos Gelato Italian at 1025 Virginia Ave where the queue is routinely out the door. Check out what the young designers of Atlanta have to offer at the Youngblood Gallery Boutique at 636 North Highlands Avenue. A haven of locally designed and made products choose from greeting cards, jewelry, homewares, bags, baby clothes and cosmetics. The three-legged cat that darts about the store is the just the icing on the cake. If you are looking for organic groceries and like the co-op shopping experience then head to Sevananda Natural Foods Market at 467 Moreland Ave NE. Whole Foods Market can be found at 650 Ponce de Leon or if you prefer there is a Trader Joes 931 Monroe Dr NE.
