Downtown, the Eastern Market at 2934 Russell Street serves as a bustling hub of freshness, where a six-block public market has been feeding Detroit since 1891. Not far away, at 422 W. Willis in Detroit’s Cass Corridor, 100% organic, locally-sourced flour is used to bake Avalon International Breads’ hearty breads and desserts. Named after the nearby historic district, Corktown Cinnamon Raisin loaf is our favorite, pumped with dark, sweet organic raisins and cinnamon. Just a few steps from the bakery, the city’s most well-known raw food eatery, Raw Café and juice bar, is located at 4160 Woodward Ave. Its menu is chock-full of meals that are all raw, vegan, organic and made fresh-to-order, following Hippocrates philosophy, “Let food be thy medicine.” For a guided tour that truly delves into the city’s affair with food, Wheelhouse Detroit offers an “Urban Agriculture: Farm to Fork” tour of the local food system at work.
