If you have the time to get out of the city then head north to Royal Oak - a college town and suburb north of downtown Detroit that offers an eclectic mix of restaurants and shopping and some great eco-conscious dining options. Om Café, at 23136 Woodward in Ferndale, is easily recognizable with its green-wash exterior, and serves up vegetarian and macrobiotic fare including much-loved entrees like Barbeque Seitan in a laid-back atmosphere. Two miles north, in Royal Oak, the sustainable Inn Season Café, at 500 E. Fourth Street, specializes in farm-to-table, seasonally-driven menus. Its intimate, cozy setting is ideal for Sunday brunch, where maple syrup-sweetened cornbread muffins and frittatas made with organic, free-range eggs, herbs, cheeses and seasonal vegetables top the must-try list. Just west of Woodward in Royal Oak, Café Muse at 418 S. Washington Ave., is regarded for fresh, local ingredients and an unbeatable grilled cheese sandwich that combines local havarti, fontina, and mozzarella cheeses with basil, tomatoes, organic bread—and an unexpected touch of honey to curl your toes. Seriously.
