Mama Naturaleza on the corner of Sagárnaga & Murillo Belen is a family-run cafe where most of the food is organically grown on the Gemio family farm of Ventilla, in the hills above La Paz. All other foods and products are purchased locally. Not only is the organic but they are also doing their best to go ‘green’ - the café is furnished using regional pine wood and the interior is lit with low-energy light bulbs. For a buffet vegetarian lunch in a relaxed, garden setting try Armonia on Avenida Ecuador 2286, Sopocachi (at Altos Liberia Armonia). The owner grows a lot of his own organic produce to use on the menu which includes soups, salads, hot dishes and desserts. Mercado Lanza is one of the main food markets in La Paz and on most mornings Llampu street (particularily around Rodriguez) is lined with women in bowler hats and full skirts selling all manner of fresh fruits, vegetables (including more varieties of potatoes than you have ever laid eyes on), stacks of plump white cheese, dairy products, freshly baked breads, fish and meat. All the produce is local and although not organically certified most of it is grown without the use of chemicals. On Zoila Flores Street there are several health food stores stocking the usual range of health foods including a few organic products.
