Collingwood and Fitzroy are inner suburbs of Melbourne with some of the best eclectic eating and shopping on offer. Just 10 minutes from the city on the No.86 tram, Smith Street is lined with great cafes, groovy second-hand furniture shops and more than their fair share of organic eats. With the slogan ‘Eat, Drink and Save the World’ Grumpy’s Green was born from a desire to create a venue with a difference. As well as having an eco-friendly approach Grumpy’s offers live music 5 nights a week, including a ‘bucket’ night on Thursdays where local singers and songwriters are invited to perform. There is an extensive organic menu including delicious breakfast options, pizzas, nachos, quesadillas and burgers. Meals can be made gluten-free on request and there is a great range of local and organic brews and wines to choose from. We enjoyed a couple of organic beers and tried the customer favourite vegie burger which was delicious. The delightful Friends of the Earth cafe and store can be found at 312 Smith Street and is a colourful and inspirational space that  attracts an eclectic mix of musicians, artists, those looking to take a more ‘active’ role in the way we live. A steady stream of overseas visitors, some who become volunteers, ensure a constant exchange of experiences and ideas. The cafe serves a seasonally-inspired hot vegetarian (often vegan) lunch everyday between 12 - 3.30. Hot lunches include things like lima bean stew, rice and a baked veggie salad, a tofu bake with a fresh garden salad (picked that day!) or an adzuki bean casserole with brown rice, baked beetroot and green bean salad. Designed to be a one-stop shop, the organic food store has a comprehensive range of organic fruit and vegetables, dry goods, drinks, cosmetics, soaps and cleaning products, many of which can be bought in bulk. There is also a great collection of books and fair trade gifts to browse on your way out. Another option for organic groceries is the Organic Wholefoods at 277 Smith Street which has a full range of organic and eco-friendly produce. Open on the second Saturday of each month the Collingwood Children's Farm farmers' market is a fantastic place to stock up on organic goodies. Set in a gorgeous location right on the Yarra river, admire the animals on the way in and marvel at the stunning Abbotsford convent. The stalls that are organic are clearly marked and include Nicholas olive oil and olives - try the Kalamata olives marinated in chilli and oregano - seriously delicious. Also look out for Hope Farm organic sourdough breads, Holy Goat organic cheese, organic vegies, naturally brewed beer and more.
