First-timers in Paris will likely spend plenty of time in the city’s western section, where major attractions such as the Champs-Elysées and Arc de Triomphe lie. Organic Jetsetters have additional reasons to go there. Perhaps the most exciting of these is The Gentle Gourmet B&B (17 rue Duret). To call this tranquil bed and breakfast “eco-friendly” is an understatement. The B&B specializes in serving up delicious organic, vegan, vegetarian and raw food meals, and makes every effort to use organic, cruelty-free products throughout the establishment. Non-guests can dine there by reservation (dinner or brunch), and even sign up for vegan cooking classes. Another strong pull for the Organic Jetsetter in this area is the third of Paris’s marchés biologiques, the Batignolles Organic Market (boulevard des Batignolles between the metro stops Place de Clichy and Rome), which takes place every Saturday morning. The superior quality and diversity of the goods rivals that of the Raspail Market, but the atmosphere is more laid-back (despite periodic Brangelina sightings) and the prices are noticeably lower. One nice – and unusual – touch in this market is one section where you’re allowed to pick and bag your own fruits and vegetables instead of having the vendor choose for you. Somehow being able to smell, squeeze and touch your produce heightens the pleasure of the market experience! If you find yourself tiring of French cuisine during your stay, scope out Bio Prestige (92 boulevard des Batignolles). This Italian specialty shop and grocery offers many organic delights including octopus salad, lasagna, fresh pasta and pesto. And while you’re in the neighborhood, drop in at the Biocoop Lemo (153 rue Legendre), an organic superstore chain found throughout Paris. Biocoop offers any foods and household products that you’ll find in an ordinary supermarket, from tea to toilet paper, but it’s all organic.
