The Marais

It’s no surprise that the trendy Marais neighborhood in central Paris has a wealth of organic dining options. First stop? Rose Bakery II on the Marais’ northern border (30 rue Debellemybe). This organic bakery – which serves brunch, lunch and tea – is the second runaway hit of Englishwoman Rose Carranini and her French husband, Jean-Charles, who opened the original Rose Bakery in 2002. Though renowned for its tantalizing fresh baked goods (particularly the carrot cake), hipster customers also stand in line for savories such as tomato-zucchini tarts, split-pea risotto, and flaky-crusted mini-pizzas. All dishes are prepared with organic, seasonal products or goods from small producers. After tanking up at the bakery, wander down the street to Bio-Moi (35 rue Debellemybe), a small but surprisingly well-stocked organic supermarket. The shop offers everything from smoked salmon to pistachio butter, and carries an impressive selection of eco-friendly cosmetics. Bio-Moi also sells fresh fruits and vegetables, but there’s a better selection at Marché des Enfants Rouges (39 rue Bretagne), just five minutes away. While this daily market isn’t 100% organic, quite a few stalls bear the “AB” label. For lunch, move deeper into the heart of Marais to try the organic buckwheat Breton-style crêpes at the popular Breizh Café (109 Vieille du Temple), or, perhaps, a quinoa burger topped with tofu and goat cheese at Potager du Marais (22 rue Rambuteau). You also won’t go wrong with a simple soup or salad at one of the communal tables of the organic bistro, Le Pain Quotidien (18-20 rue des Archives, 75003).  Just before you tiptoe out the neighborhood, check out La Cuisine Paris (80 Quai de Hôtel d’Ville), an English-language cooking school run by American-French couple, Jane Bertch and Olivier Pugliese-Conti. Twice a month, the school offers classes with 99% organic ingredients: learn to make traditional French dinners – or pastries!
