A couple hour’s drive south east of NYC lies a gem steeped in Cheez Whiz and pretzel salt; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The city’s iconic culinary offerings include the Philly Cheese Steak (a white roll with steak, Cheez Whiz and onions) and salty Pretzels (80% of the country’s pretzels come from Philly and Philadelphians eat 14 times as many pretzels as the average American). While these indulgences are far from organic, the city also hosts a wonderful selection of equally delicious certified organic, locally grown food. It seems more and more like the idea of eating local has hit the mainstream and nowhere is this more evident than in Philadelphia. Many of the local farms are tended by Amish communities, this means traditional farming methods and good news for health conscious consumers.
