For any Organic Jetsetter a visit to the Reading Terminal Market on 12th and Arch St is a must. Amongst the hustle and bustle of the market you will find an organic sanctuary aptly named The Fair Food Farmstand. Here they carry an outstanding array of local products sourced from over 90 organic and sustainable farms throughout southeast Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. With an emphasis on small-scale operations and organic farming practices they sell farm-fresh eggs, organic and seasonal fruit and veg, raw milk (rare as hens’ teeth!) and cheeses, dried fruits, honeys and jams, and much more depending on the season. Notably the humanely and pasture-raised meats are in high demand. Don’t miss the doubled smoked bacon or the Shellbark Sharp Chevre goat cheese which goes great atop one of their locally grown strawberries. About 25 minutes walk from Reading Terminal Market (or a short ride on the Subway to Spring Garden Station) is the best brunch in town at Cafe Estelle. Located at 444 North 4th St between Callowhill and Spring Garden it was voted “Best of Philly 2009” brunch. Cafe Estelle has been wowing customers ever since with its seasonal menu and use of local and organic ingredients. Everything from the breads, biscuits, pastries to the sausages, bacon, mozzarella and even the ice cream, are made in-house. The chef uses organic eggs, naturally raised free range meats, hormone and antibiotic-free dairy, organic and locally roasted fair trade coffee, organic chocolate and single-origin organic tea. The spring menu highlights include Pappardelle Primavera with Ramps and Softshell Crab Sandwich. Expect to wait on Sundays but you may just catch a glimpse of pro baseball players for the “Phillies” who make up some of the regular clientele. There is a Whole Foods Market at 929 South Street with all the usual organic goodies one finds at a Wholefoods. While you’re in the area why not go across the street to Big Green Earth Store where you will find a range of environmentally friendly products that may help you on your travels. Walk a few blocks east and you will encounter the popular and upscale vegan restaurant, Horizons at 611 South 7th St. 60% of their produce is organic and supplied locally. According to PETA, Horizons is one of the top 8 Vegetarian Restaurants in the USA and with mains like Wood Roasted Maitake Mushrooms with royal trumpets, peas, leek ash, fingerlings and truffle sauce for only $20USD it’s not hard to see why. Back on South St at number 1713 is Pumpkin. The menu changes daily depending on what the chef fancies that day. It also has its own market down the street at 1610 South St. It’s unclear how much of the menu is organic but the emphasis is on freshness and locals supporting locals. All day breakfast is a nice touch and so is BYO. Why not head over to Food and Friends, a great little general store at 1933 Spruce St (a stone’s throw from Pumpkin) and bring back a few bottles of fully organic beer. Food and Friends has a mind-blowing selection of beer and nice selection of organic groceries. It is open until midnight every day and is your best bet for late night organic groceries. Although not organic, the Flavours of Philly Food tour is a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend an afternoon in Philadelphia. As we were guided around the city sampling the local food – think tomato pie, pretzels, cheese steaks (our favourite!) and fresh baked cookies – we also enjoyed enjoyed the history and local anecdotes from our guide Jamie who was hilarious, well-informed and completely smitten with his own city.
