Capitol Hill

On a gradually-rising slope in the center of Washington, D.C. lies the font of political power in the United States. Capitol Hill is home to a slew of majestic, creamy-white federal buildings no less illustrious than the Supreme Court, the Congressional and Senate chambers, and, of course, the Capitol. But behind these monuments of power, you’ll find a charming, hip neighborhood hosting a variety of organic restaurants and markets. Rub elbows with Congressional aides and other “Hill workers” at Sweetgreen (221 Pennsylvania Avenue), a café serving up mouthwatering salads, wraps and soups composed primarily of organic, locally-sourced ingredients. On warm days, skip the salad and go for an organic fat-free plain frozen yogurt topped with fresh fruit and crunch. Not in the mood for salad? Walk down the street to Le Pain Quotidien (660 Pennsylvania Avenue). This Belgian bakery and restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, is known for its communal tables, fresh crusty bread, and commitment to eco-friendly dining. Not only does the restaurant use organic ingredients wherever possible, it uses energy-efficient lamps and reclaimed wood for its furniture. Go here especially for organic omelets and Belgian-style open-face sandwiches. For dessert, head next door to Pitango Gelato (660 Pennsylvania Avenue) which sells Italian-style ice cream in a range of unique flavors – think Cardamom, Quince, and Spicy Chocolate– all made with organic milk from grass-fed cows. Just two minutes from Pitango, you’ll find Yes! Organic Market (658 Pennsylvania Avenue), a small supermarket that’ll meet most of your organic food and homeware needs, from produce to paper towels. Also, don’t miss a meal at Wellness Café (325 Pennsylvania Avenue), a natural food store and organic deli, whose organic salmon burgers are legendary. On Saturday mornings, drop by Eastern Market (225-7th St., SE), D.C.’s oldest farmers market. While most of the produce isn’t organic, it’s all local, fresh and stunningly delicious.
