Central Wellington
There are undeniably two staples of the Wellington organic food and product scene. The first is a foodstore, Common Sense Organics at 260 Wakefield Street, Wellington (they also have stores in Hutt, Kapiti and Kilbirnie). One third of their produce is from their Bio-Gro certified market garden in nearby Te Aro. Their website also provides useful information on food for pregnancy and diabetics and they stock a large range of food and products. The second is the vegetarian Pranah Cafe at 120 Riddiford Street, Newtown which serves wholesome non-processed food and Organic Trade Aid coffee. We highly recommend the quesadilla and can safely say that all the meals we tried were full of flavour. The ambiance is rustic and very welcoming; the only thing to note is that the space is fairly small which can be a problem with small children. You can also find a great selection of natural, organic and wholefoods at Homestead Health foodstore at 112 Cuba Street, Te Aro, Wellington. As well as consumables they stock nutritional supplements, aromatherapy oils and cosmetics. They also have a supply of non-organic food so be sure to check with a staff member that what you're buying is organic. Another option is to order fresh produce online from Organic Boxes. You can select what goes into your box and they deliver anywhere in the Wellington region (including hotels and apartments) on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
